Day 15 - Happiness. A truly bad event made better. Cooking at a bestie's house. drinking pink moscato, she's playing with my kids and making them laugh. Ahh sweet sweet happiness

Day 16 - Morning. Sam hit his head last night and this is the egg this morning.

Day 17 - Water. It’s raining today in Brisbane. This is the tyre swing full of water and water pistols.

Day 18 - Something you bought. I bought these postcards of Yayoi Kasuma's current exhibits. I fell madly in love

Day 19 - Sweet. The lolly jar! Everyone else thinks this is empty!

Day 20 - someone you love. These guys. It’s an old photo but the only one on my phone of all three!

January 2010 Photo-A-Day-Challenge week in review - week 2

Day 8 - Your sky. I’m at the markets today and just as I took this pic outside my stall I saw the heart shaped cloud. Cool.

Day 9 - Your Daily Routine. Cannot operate without a cup of tea. I love it Grandma style, from a pot complete with cosy and a special spoon. Thanks @petatron for my Vegas Wayne Newton spoon.

Day 10 - Childhood. What could be better for a morning tea surprise snack then a cup full of ice cream with strawberry topping, sprinkles, marshmallows, and a cherry on top. Such a hot day deserves an awesome childhood treat.

Day 11 - Where you sleep.

Day 13 - In your bag. Purse made by Sybella. Nurse hairclip made by me, sunnies, pens, deodorant, camera, lots of paper.

Day 14 - what I'm reading. I always read a few books at once. Main fave right now is DK's 77 Shadow St

January 2012 Photo-A-Day-Challenge Week 1 Review

I love Instagram.


I have been participating in fatmumslim's January Photo-a-day-challenge.

I stumbled across the fun on Day 3 but decided to just keep going from there instead of playing catch up.

I have been linking my images with my Tumblr page but thought it might be fun to put a weeks images on here as well.

Week 1 Photo's of Days 3 - 7

The List

Day 3 - Something I adore - the 80’s U2 especially the live at Red Rocks concert. This concert was amazing and I watched it as a kid. It changed how I saw U2 and post punk pop music.

Day 4 - Letterbox. This is one in my local area. At Christmas they dress him in a Santa suit. Made from recycled metal.

Day 5 - Something I wore. I love these shoes heaps! So comfy.

Day 6 - Makes you smile. I love vintage ads. Sometimes they are gobsmackingly awful but sometimes like this one I get a giggle. We all need pine scented fuel to squeeze over the BBQ to impress our friends with our fire mastery.

Day 7 - Favourite. This is my favourite costume I have made. Jack and Sally from a nightmare before Christmas. It only just beat out my ‘Melanie Daniels’ from The Birds costume.

Tutorial: How to make your own inexpensive light box

If you follow my blog you'd know that it's been raining here in Brisbane for almost 8 weeks straight. If you're like me and make things to sell as a hobby but do it from home, trying to take decent photo is near impossible.

But fear not my friends, using things most of us have lying around the house, you can make a cheap yet functioning light box to take those beautiful photos for your etsy, made it, facebook or website.

LIGHTBOX TUTORIAL

ITEMS NEEDED

• 1 cardboard box (it doesn't matter what size as long as it's big enough to hold inside the objects you want to photograph)
• 1 ruler
• 1 pen
• scissors
• stanley knife / box cutter
• white fabric (or tissue paper)
• tape
• white spray paint or extra sheets of white cardboard
• sheet of cardboard or paper in whatever colours you want your backgrounds to be
• lamps or lights with daylight bulbs (desk lamps are fine - just make sure they have a daylight bulb)

METHOD:

1. Take your ruler and measure in about 2-3 cm from the edge towards the inside panel of the box until you have created a border. Do this to all sides except the back and the bottom.

2. Cut out the inside of these borders.

3. I didn't have time for this part but now you can paint or cut white paper frames for the inside of the box. My border is quite narrow and I ran out of time to let it dry so I omitted this step.

4. Wrap the fabric around the outside of the box. When choosing fabric make sure it's not too dense. Muslin or lightweight cotton are the best. If your using tissue paper tape it to the outside of the sides, and top.

5. Cut a piece of cardboard or paper the width of the box and the length of the back and bottom of the box. Make sure you don't crease it. You want the back to be curved slightly so there is a seamless background in your photographs.

6. Place your lamp(s) on either side, both sides and/or the top of the box. I'm only using one today but at night I would recommend one each side and on top.

TIPS:

• Make sure your lamp has daylight bulbs or the colour may not be right
• You might need to adjust your white balance on your camera
• Make any further adjustments to brightness etc using a photo editing tool/suite
• If you don't have white fabric you can use paper
• Be careful using the box cutter
• Never leave your lights unattended and be wary of fire

So much better. It loses that blue tinge that overcast days are inclined to give. There is still some shadow there but that is because I am using only one light.

So there you go ... I hope this helps you get some of your stuff photographed.
